B.S. Degree Requirements
Prerequisites to the major
1. Boty 1050 Intro to Botany, 4 units, Zool 1050 Intro to Zoology, 4 units
2. Chem 1100 Principles of Chemistry I, 5 units, Chem 1110 Principles of Chemistry II, 5 units
3. Chem 3010, 3012 Organic Chemistry, 4-5units
4. Mathematics (statistics or calculus), 3-4 units
5. Physics (one-year sequence), 8 units
6. Elective courses in Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics, Physics or Physical Sciences, 3-4 units
The major
7. Biol 3310 Cellular & Molecular Biology, 3 units
Courses in Genetics:
a. Biol 3350 Intro to Genetics, 3 units
b. One course from the following: Biol 4820, 4830, 4840, 2 units or Biol 4842, 1 unit
Courses in Animal and Plant Science, 8 units:
a. One course must be selected from Entomology or Zoology
b. One course must be selected from Botany or Microbiology
c. One of the above courses must deal with the diversity of organisms. Acceptable courses are: Boty 3100, Boty 3120, Boty 3700, Ento 3000, Ento 3330, Ento 3740, Mbio 3010/3032, Zool 3610, Zool 4420, Zool 4430, Zool 4440, Zool 4620, Zool 4630, Zool 4640.
Course in Ecology, 4 units; to be selected from: Biol 4630, Biol 4650, Biol 4680 or Boty 4600
Course in Physiology, 4 units; to be selected from: Boty 4200, Zool 4230 or Zool 4280
Electives in the Biological Sciences: 14 units
Total units in the major: 37-38 units (of these, 29 MUST BE Upper Division for the B.S.). No more than eight units of CR-graded course work from courses graded exclusively CR/NC may apply toward the major. A total of six units of individual study credit earned is the maximum permitted toward the major.
