Fall 2009

Announcements

9/9: Welcome. Be sure to visit often.

9/11: The STD form of syphilis does indeed appear to have been spread from the New World to Old World, perhaps by Columbus's crew. Here is a recent DNA analysis. However, TB appears to have originated in Asia. Here is an article on that.

9/13: Here is a link to an important essay by a famous evolutionary biologist.

9/21: I see many students are already skipping class. You will regret it. Here is a graph of attendance vs. grades for a general biology class similar to ours.

9/23: The first exam will cover from Introduction through Osmosis. Please review the rules and procedures for exams. E.g. since there are different versions of the exam, failure to record the red exam number on your scantron may result in the wrong key being used. Also be sure to fill the room from the front or the exam will be delayed.

9/23: Friday September 25 is a furlough day. There is no class, but you are responsible for the photosynthesis lecture. Your text has all the figures that would be shown in class and Youtube has over 2,000 videos on the subject. Your instructor will answer a few very specific questions on photosynthesis at the beginning of class on Monday, Sept 28. But he will not lecture on the topic.

9/29: Read the proper procedures for email correspondence. Emails without a subject, in this case the course number, will not be read, nor acknowledged by your instructor.

9/29: The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)program  is offering tutoring workshops for this class: Neha Chadha, Facilitator; Mondays, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm; Naraghi Hall, Room 124; Email:  neha4ever2006@yahoo.com

10/2: On Oct. 11, 9 pm the Discovery Channel will have a special on Ardi, a 4.4 million year old fossil human ancestor. Website for the program here.

10/7: Just a reminder that Monday, October 12 is a Furlough Day and there will be no class. Your assignment is the Cell Division notes. If you waited for me on Monday, 10/5, you already have a great head start. Your text, an Internet image search, as well as a video search of Youtube will provide you with plenty of supplemental materials.

10/19: The second exam on Friday, Oct. 23 will cover the lectures photosynthesis through DNA.

10/20: November 23 and 25 furlough day assignment has been posted on the syllabus. Be sure to download the questions, worth 10 pts., which must be handed in by Nov. 30 at 12:20 pm. Questions from this series may also appear on the final exam.

11/18: Radiometric Dating A Christian Perspective.

11/19: Purchase the proper scantron form well in advance of exams. No excuses, including the bookstore runs out of them, will be accepted for not having the proper form for any exam.

11/20: Because MSR offices are closed for furloughs today, the deadline for submitting your change of grading option form to Admissions and Records has been extended to 5 pm November 23. However, the deadline for your instructor to sign them has passed.
