Do either A or B, not both. These are both time-consuming, but you will get some practical experience, whichever one you choose.

A. Restoration: hard work, healing work.

The Tuolumne River Trust is looking for volunteers to help with its restoration project at Big Bend.  You need to go for the entire morning, work as directed, and write up the experience. Your write up should include the purpose of the project, what you and the other volunteers did that day, and your feelings or impressions of the experience. I expect at least one page of written work, plus a couple photos to show the project, and yourself at the site. Two dates are available, you only need to go once. For more information, go to the website. www.tuolumne.org  I believe the restoration site is southwest of Modesto, between Modesto and Grayson. It would probably take 20 – 30 minutes to drive there from either Turlock or the west side Modesto. You will get more detailed directions when you call or e-mail to sign up.

B. Your Diet: Small footprint, big heart.

Many of you found out that your ecological footprint could be lowered substantially by reducing the amount of meat, dairy, and eggs you consumed. How hard would it be to replace some of the animal products you now eat with vegan foods? Your assignment is to choose something you normally eat that contains animal products- it could be a cooked  dinner dish, a baked good, or even the typical lunch you eat, and make a vegan replacement. You will analyze the nutrient content of both meals, and compare them on the basis of nutrients, taste, etc.  Share it with a couple other people, if possible, to get their opinions.  Nutrient content is usually available with printed recipes- or you can look up the fat, carbohydrate, protein, cholesterol, and caloric values for the individual components, and estimate. Again, I want some photos for verification.
