BIOL 2650 Group Exercise 4: 20 points,  Due 5/21  Spring 2008

Given the following facts or assumptions:

1. Using conventional energy sources, such as coal, oil and natural gas, generates CO2, which is a greenhouse gas. Anthropogenic greenhouse gasses are causing climate change, with many potential negative environmental and economic impacts.

2. Alternative energy sources include biofuels, such as ethanol and biodiesel. Hypothetically, these fuels should have a zero net carbon impact, since they use CO2 during the growth of the plants. Therefore, they have been suggested as environmentally sound substitutes for fossil fuels.

3. Recently, the price of petroleum has skyrocketed. Why?

4. Recently, there have been riots and demonstrations in several developing countries over the cost of food. The UN and other relief agencies say they do not have enough money to feed the poor. What do all of the above factors have to do with the price of food?

5. What policies should we, as a developed nation., enact to address these issues?

Your assignment is to make clear the relationships between these problems, and come up with a concrete course of action that you would like to see our government, and private industry if necessary, take to reduce the social and environmental impacts.
