THE LEGACY OF JOSEPH GRINNELL:PREDICTING THE FUTURE FROM THE
LEGACY OF THE PAST
Distinguished Lecture in Evolution and Ecology
JAMES PATTON
MUSEUM OF VERTEBRATE ZOOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF
CALIFORNIA BERKELEY
Nearly a century ago, Joseph Grinnell, founding director of the Museum of
Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ), made extensive surveys of animal life throughout
California. Dr. James Patton, Professor Emeritus at U.C. Berkeley and Curator of
Mammals at the MVZ, will discuss the MVZ’s recent efforts to resurvey vertebrate
diversity at the sites first sampled by Grinnell, including sites in Yosemite
National Park and elsewhere in the Sierra Nevada. By documenting changes in the
distribution of animal species, the Grinnell Resurvey Project has provided
important information on the responses of natural communities to climate change.
The Department of Biological Sciences invites the campus and
community to this capstone Earth Week event.
