Salmon Falls, Folsom Lake

January 28, 2001

Today I went with Kip and two of his friends, Glen and Rob, for about a 19 mile ride around the Salmon Falls Trail. The weather was a bit cool at the start but once the sun had been up for a while it warmed up quite nicely. At mile 2.8 we took the right fork (rather than the recommended left fork) and headed up the steep, rocky, monster climb via an old road. That took us all the way around Flagstaff Hill where we eventually joined up at what is usually considered the farthest point on the out and back trail at mile 7.8. We then came back the recommended route to the start. The hill climb reminded me that I still wasn't quite recovered from my cold the previous week. Only one incident to report. I was too lazy to put my camera back in its case so I tried going down a hill one handed. I had planned on taking a picture at the bottom of the hill. Big mistake! I got going too fast, could only use the front brake (since I carried the camera in my right hand), and I pretty much went over the handle bars. Fortunately I'm still wearing my knee and elbow guards. They took nearly all the fall, enabling me to get right back up. I barely managed to keep the camera off the ground as I hit. The first three pictures below are from previous trips. I have drawn a very rough approximation of our route on a topo map. The green line represents a new trail that is still under construction.
