Fort Ord (West), Monterey

August 27, 2000

We had such a good time the previous week that we decided to explore the western part of Fort Ord. Again, it was perfect 70 degree weather, spectacular scenery, and great trails. Although the trails were up and down, providing great aerobic workouts, there were virtually no areas requiring any more than beginning technical skills. However, certain trails contained huge expanses of deep sand which often made us get off and walk. I hit some deep sand and was sent into some shrubs where I cut my knee on something sharp. Here is a picture (graphic content). Fortunately we carry medical supplies. Some trails had quite a bit of poison oak, and we stopped once after contact to apply Technu. Neil was recovering from an infection obtained the previous week so we chickened out on trail 50, which was overgrown with poison oak. We started at the East Garrison gate off G17 south of Salinas. We took the following route: 14, 69 (but too sandy), Watkins Gate Rd., 70, 21, 68, 56, 16, 23 (all sand), Crescent Bluff Rd. south, 49 (dead ended), 50 (until poison oak), Crescent Bluff Rd. (north and west) back to East Garrison. Here is the route map. Trails marked in yellow are deep sand.
