Fort Ord (Laguna Seca), Monterey

Since I hadn't been to Fort Ord in a long time and I just had three consecutive rides in oppressive heat, I decided to seek out cooler weather. With overcast skies and a high fog the weather was indeed very cool, almost too cool. However, after I heated up going up several hills, the temperature seemed just about right. Since I had been to the east and west sides of Ord I decided to try the most difficult part, the Laguna Seca mountain bike race trails. I took the following route: Toro Creek Rd., Guidotti Rd., Trails 47, 48, Skyline Rd., 11, 43, 41, Oilwell Rd., Skyline Rd., Guidotti Rd., Toro Creek Rd. The climb from the trailhead up to Trail 47 is quite long and difficult, considering you don't have time to warm up. Trails 47 and 48, the Laguna Seca mountain bike trails, are excellent, very narrow, hard packed, winding, bumpy singletrack going down into and then back out a steep canyon. The photos do not show the steepness. Trail 11 was unmarked in the direction I went but it was marked on the other end (I just followed a sign to Lookout Ridge). It had some really nasty rutted sections with some steep ups and downs. Since it was the most remote part of the trip I walked down about two steep descents I probably would have tried if I weren't by myself. Trails 43 and 41 are very nice rolling singletrack. Oilwell Rd. is a long gradual climb. The color coding on the map is as follows: red - singletrack, green - singletrack/doubletrack, yellow- dirt road, blue - gravel road.
