Fort Ord Memories

It had been about nine months since I last rode with Dennis but he hadn't been to Fort Ord so he asked me for a tour. While I've been struggling to ride once a week he has been tearing up the trails, so he is in excellent shape. However, he was quite patient and easy going, and when he got too far ahead he stopped to take photos. His photos and ride description should be on his site shortly. At the trailhead at the south end of Toro Creek estates it seemed to be as hot as I've ever remembered so I was a bit apprehensive about the long climb up Guidotti road. But Dennis pulled me along at least as fast as I've ever gone up it. We then proceeded down Hurl Hill to trail 47 which seemingly almost nobody ever goes on. It was quite overgrown and barely a trail for most of the way. Along the way I became a bit concerned about the heat but as we neared the Laguna Seca racetrack cool ocean breezes began to come in and the temperature cooled quite considerably for the remainder of the trip. We then made our way along trail 11 to Lookout Ridge. There seemed to be a bit more sand on all the trails and I managed to do a little endo when my front wheel got caught in some deep sand. We then went down trail 49, up trail 43 and then down the Goat Trail (41), a long mostly downhill singletrack. We seemed to be going a bit faster than planned so we went up Oil Well road to trail 10 and proceeded back down the Goat Trail just for the fun of it. Since we didn't want to do the grind up Oil Well road again we cut through Toro Creek Estates back to the trailhead. Here is the route map. The color coding on the map is as follows: red - singletrack, green - dirt/gravel road, black - pavement.
