Stanislaus National Forest

July 16, 2000

We did the Elephant Rock Loop plus a short trip up the Utica Reservoir Road in Stanislaus National Forest. It consisted of mostly gravel logging roads plus a bit of a hiking trail. This was our first foray onto single track trails. With our beginner technical skills it was both quite challenging and quite exciting. I fell once. At 7,000 feet the weather was perfect and the scenery was spectacular. The hiking trail is very poorly marked. From the south end you come to a fork that goes left on to a trail and right onto big boulders and rocks. Take the fork that goes over the rocks. You will have to carry your bike up over the rocks to continue on the trail.
